Northern supper

Traditional northern fish n chips, freshly cooked and wrapped in newspaper to take away.

I don't care what culinary claims they make down here in London - from more than 20 years' experience as a northerner living in the capital I can attest that you just CAN'T GET a decent fish supper here.

So we took advantage of our weekend in Scotland to savour the real thing - I believe this version was even cooked in beef fat or something similar. Don't forget to drench with malt vinegar and then salt generously. If you are feeling really adventurous and it's not raining, eat straight out of the wrapper using your fingers, while sitting on a park bench.

That's just so cruel!! When I got to the malt vinegar bit I could have cried! Yummmmmm

Oh, that looks so good! Here in USA you simply cannot get a good fish & chips. Having grown up in UK, one of my fondest memories involved our weekly F&C dinner wrapped lovingly in newspaper... maybe the ink made it taste better!

I'm so jealous!! I had my last fish-n-chips a month ago when I was visiting my boyfriend in England. I wish we had places like this!!!

Eating fish and chips any other way than with your fingers is a travesty. Of course it's best eaten from the wrapping - preferably sitting watching the waves.

Did they do scraps as well? Southerners look horrified when I tell them about scraps. Silly red sauce people.

@colleen that's definitely the best option when you are next to the sea.

@ginger knits scraps (or fish bits as they were optimistically known in my home town!) weren't on the menu, but I think that's the kind of thing you have to ask for in your local accent, while tapping the side of your nose and nodding knowingly.

Thanks Rowan. I was wondering when you were going to show up since I put the word 'northern' in the title just to draw you in ;-)

got to say, my favourite chippy tea is not fish and chips but steak pudding, chips and gravy. only ever managed to find it in Lancashire (they don't do the puddings over here in Yorkshire that I've found so far).

fish and chips - best to go to the coast for the freshness of the fish, I reckon. Whitby has some great chippies, as has Brid.

that said, the battered fish at J Sheekey in London is awesome if much more expensive than anything you'll pay for oop north :)

Looking forward to checking out Whitby's chippers in a couple of weeks!
